Bryn Cader Faner
Bryn Cader Faner is one of the most interesting historic sites for Bronze Age standing stones in Wales, as well as being one of the toughest to reach. Circular in design, the inner pile of stones is bordered by eighteen stone monoliths, although this is originally thought to have been thirty when first constructed.
The remote location of Bryn Cader Faner is also incredibly interesting, sited deep in the Rhinogydd range of mountains, a few miles east from the seaside town of Harlech in Gwynedd. The site is surrounded by small mountain lakes and any visit here wouldn’t be complete without taking time to check them out too.
View of Yr Wyddfa
One of the most striking things when standing at Bryn Cader Faner is the incredible view of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest mountain peak in Wales and England. Looking north from the stone circle provides one with a fantastic uninterrupted view of this majestic mountain. It could be suggested that the view may have influenced the choice of location of this stone circle.
Standing Stones
The eighteen standing stones at Bryn Cader Faner stand between 80cm and 100cm tall and the stone is native to the surrounding mountains. The stones are all set at angles which gives Bryn Cader Faner it’s crown of thorns appearance. Many large boulders fill the circle and it’s clear that at some point there was a large hole dug in the centre, possibly for burial purposes but today it makes a great coffee stop out of the wind!

Visit Bryn Cader Faner
Due to it’s remote mountain location Bryn Cader Faner is not the best choice for the average tourist visiting Wales. That being said, for any avid hiker it’s a rewarding wander through boggy and craggy terrain and is commonly walked as part of a larger trail route. There are very rough public footpaths from the north, south and west so it’s worth doing some proper research before attempting a first visit, to work out the best route for your own abilities and navigation skills.
