Avebury Stone Circle
Avebury Stone Circle and Henge is a world heritage site containing the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. Built during the Neolithic period between 2850 BC and 2200 BC it consists of a henge and three separate stone circles.
Many theories exist around the reason for these strategically placed stones, but it is believed to have been built for some form of rituals or ceremonies. Situated in the small village of Avebury, the stone circle is only 25 miles away from another famous world heritage site Stone Henge and there could well be a connection between these two iconic sites.
Megalithic Stone Circle
The Megalithic Stone Circle is just one of many Neolithic and Bronze Age cermonial sites at Avebury. To the South lies West Kennet Avenue which originally included around 100 pairs of pre historic standing stones stretching across 1.5 miles of gently sloping terrain. Shapes and sizes vary considerably with a few of our favourites included below.
Visit Avebury Stones
Avebury Village is located 6 miles from the market town of Marlborough and only 25 miles from Stonehenge. The main car park can be found using the postcode SN8 1RF. There is a charge to park but is free for National Trust members. There are facilities available in the Alexander Kellier Museum which can be reached as you exit the car park down the footpath.
