Types of Rock

As real stone geeks we love discovering new information about our favourite rocks and boulders! Here’s a brief introduction to the four most commonly found rock types for water features from Snowdonia and across Wales.

Formed up to 500 million years ago, Welsh Slate was created when mudstone, shale and volcanic ash were compressed together by low heat and immense pressure. Slate is hard, durable and waterproof, hence why it was so popular as a roofing tile. Earliest records show slate from Snowdonia being used as early as 77AD by the Romans.

Granite is a course grained igneous rock, formed by magma, molten rock, cooling underground. Located between the earth’s crust and the mantle, magma sometimes rises towards the surface and cools on it’s journey. Without an escape route this can solidify and is usually full of small crystals. Granite is incredibly dense and requires unique tools to machine pieces into Snowdonia Water Features for gardens and landscaping projects.

Limestone is formed when shells, coral, algal and other organic material is compressed over a long period of time. It’s a sedimentary rock that contains large amounts of calcium carbonate. Interestingly the Romans discovered that British limestone could be highly polished to what they called “Marmoro”, which later became what we know today as marble.

Sandstone is commonly formed when silicate sand grains are delivered to basins by rivers. Over long periods of time these grains compress to form bedrocks. Sandstone has a huge amount of colour variations, due to the impurities and random levels of the original minerals in the deposited sand.
